These courses are based on the national model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the UMass Medical Center. Each class will involve meditation instruction and practice, group discussions, and educational presentations on the relationships between stress, health and mindfulness. Classes may include very gentle yoga postures. Each student is encouraged to establish a daily meditation practice, and participants are given a course workbook and digital recordings for home practice. Both courses are open to the community, but the fee for the class offered through the Knight Cancer Institute has a subsidized rate for people healing from cancer and their caregivers.
Three decades of published research indicates that the majority of people who complete the course – including cancer patients – report: Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away, an increased ability to relax, greater energy and enthusiasm for life, improved self-esteem, an increased ability to cope effectively with stressful situations and a lasting decrease in physical and psychological symptoms.
